Greenwood School District 50 Announces Withdrawal of Recommended Choice & Magnet Program Changes

Today, Greenwood School District 50 announced that the recommended changes to choice & magnet programs will be withdrawn. These changes were recently under consideration by the Board of Trustees. After a careful review of the feedback received from the community and the lack of support from the Board of Trustees, the decision was made to withdraw the recommendation.

Board Chairman Clay Sprouse said: “Due to the overwhelming feedback in opposition from our community, the School Board has encouraged the administration to withdraw this proposal. As a School Board, we will continue to encourage healthy conversations and explore ways to ensure quality opportunities for all of our students.”

Superintendent Glenn stated: “After careful evaluation and lack of support for this idea, we have decided to withdraw the recommended changes to the choice & magnet programs. We want to ensure all of our stakeholders that our goal was never to hurt our school district or community with these recommended changes. We would never make changes that adversely affect the work and rigor of our educational programs or opportunities. While we believe this would have had a positive impact for students, we will continue to research other opportunities to extend the progress that our elementary students are making in District 50. All choice & magnet school programs will remain in place and operate as normal. These recommended changes will not be proposed again during my tenure as Superintendent.”

Board Chairman Sprouse continued: “Throughout this process, we have been grateful for the feedback, insights, and concerns shared by all of our stakeholders regarding our choice & magnet programs. Our district remains committed to providing quality educational opportunities for all students and will engage stakeholders in further discussions to explore alternative strategies to make our district better.”

Following the withdrawal of the recommended changes, all choice & magnet school programs will remain in place and operate as normal. District 50 will begin its application process for all choice & magnet schools beginning Monday, December 2nd at noon. The choice & magnet applications and timelines can be found at gwd50.org/choicemagnet/.
