On Friday, August 16th the South Carolina Department of Education released the 2023 - 2024 school year results of the South Carolina College and Career Ready Assessments (SC READY) in the subject areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math for students in grades 3-8.
District 50 was highlighted in a South Carolina Department of Education press release for showing significant improvement from 2019 to 2024 in Math in Grade 4 and ELA in Grade 5. In Math, students in Grade 4 achieved a +28 percentage point improvement, with 61% of students meeting or exceeding expectations. In ELA, students in Grade 5 demonstrated a +32 percentage point increase, with 62% of students meeting or exceeding expectations. In order to be recognized by the state, each grade level subject area had to show a 23 percentage point improvement. Our 3rd grade ELA improved by 22.2 percentage points while 4th grade ELA improved by 22.5 points.
“Our district continued to see significant improvement in several areas on this year’s state assessments,” Superintendent Dr. Steve Glenn stated. “The growth we’ve seen since 2019 has been unbelievable. We’re very excited about where we are, but always looking and striving for ways to get better.”
According to the press release, there has been some improvement in Math state scores from 2023 to 2024. The overall state performance in Math is still below pre-pandemic levels and will continue to receive “targeted intervention” from the state. This state trend in Math is also reflected in District 50’s performance as marginal gains have been made in Math since the pandemic. Our middle schools will continue to work hard on strategies in conjunction with the state to address this subject area.
